Hello lovely reader,
Are you still using pads and tampons? If so, I have a message for you.
Although pads and tampons are a familiar way to deal with your period, humanity has been gifted with a new approach, the moon cup! (or diva cup, among many other names.)
These cups are essentially as they sound, a small cup made of silicone that is inserted into the vagina during menstruation. It has a suctioning effect that holds the cup in place, and you can leave it in for up to 12 hours. The cup fills with blood, when it’s time to remove it you use your thumb and index finger to pinch the bottom part of the cup (breaking the suction) and gently remove it from the vagina. You then dump the contents into the toilet and wash the cup in sink. Once cleaned, it is ready to be re inserted and catch your blood for another 12 hours!
There are many advantages to using cups over traditional pads and tampons.
One major benefit is cost. Think about it.. You’d never need to buy tampons again! Just keep your cup in your makeup bag and it’s always there ready to go. One of these cups goes for about $40 and lasts for 2-3 years. Be sure to spend the money on a quality made one to avoid leaks. If you think about how much you spend on pads and tampons in 2-3 years you would be astounded by how much money you can save with these things.
Another huge factor is how environmentally friendly cups are. Tampons, pads and their packaging end up in the landfill. They are toxic to our bodies and the environment. There are all kinds of substances and chemicals in pads and tampons. Flushing tampons down the toilet is a huge problem in our society and it is costing us the health of our planet. Using mooncups has a huge impact of reducing waste in the environment.
The lack of regulations around feminine products allows companies to put whatever they want into their products without labeling it. If you are buying most store brand tampons, you are inserting a plethora of harmful chemicals that are absorbing into your body. This might sound harsh, but it’s the truth. There needs to be more regulations around what is allowed in feminine products and all products that humans consume in any way. Just because you are not eating it doesn’t mean it’s not getting absorbed into your body.
Moon cups also last longer than traditional methods, resulting in more ease throughout your day as you don’t need to change it out every time you go to the bathroom. You are also able to swim comfortably with cups in and wear a swimsuit without worrying about leakage and loose strings.
Moon cups make you more connected to your body. It helps you to become familiar with your vagina’s depth and smell. You get comfortable with seeing your blood and start appreciating it more than seeing it as a nuisance. You will begin to notice the stages in your cycle by the amount, color and thickness of your blood. The blood is rich in minerals and can be used as fertilizer in for your garden.
Switching from traditional methods to cups was a no brainer for me. It was a bit uncomfortable as I was first learning how to use the cup but after I got the hang of it I was hooked! I couldn’t believe I spent so many years of my life addressing my periods without it. I will never go back to tampons and pads ever again. These amazing cups have changed my life for the better helped me to view periods in a whole new light. It is a product that I have been behind for several years and I truly believe it can benefit anyone that takes the time to learn how to use it.
